Install Forge manually

Install Forge manually

Versions, mods & modpacks · Updated 27 October 2026

Forge's installer can't run on the server, so you install the server on your computer, then upload it.

Before you start

Switching from Paper? Back up your world first, because a Paper world may not load on Forge. See Back up and restore your server. Then stop your server. You also need Java installed on your computer.

Download Forge

  1. Go to https://files.minecraftforge.net, and pick your Minecraft version on the left.
  2. Click Installer. You may see an advert page first: wait a few seconds, then click Skip.

Install the server on your computer

  1. Make an empty folder.
  2. Double-click the installer, choose Install server, and pick that folder.
  3. When it says it installed successfully, open the folder.
  4. Select everything inside it, and zip it.

Upload it to your server

  1. In your panel, open Server Files, and rename the old server.jar to something like server-old.jar.
  2. Click Upload, and choose your zip. It's quite big, so it may take a minute. Over 1 GB? Use FileZilla.
  3. Right-click the zip, and choose Unzip.
  4. Find the file ending in -shim.jar, and rename it to server.jar.
  5. Start your server. In the console, you'll see it starting up with Forge.

Once it works, you can delete server-old.jar and the zip. Then add your mods to the mods folder.
