Upload a world to your Java server

Worlds · Updated 27 October 2026

Bring a world from your computer to your server, and set it as the world your server plays on.

1. Find your world

  • Windows: press Win + R, type %appdata%, then open .minecraft › saves.
  • Mac: in Finder, choose Go › Go to Folder… and enter ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves.

Each folder in saves is one of your worlds.

2. Zip it

  • Windows: right-click the world folder › Send to › Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Mac: right-click the world folder › Compress.

Zip the world folder itself. When you open the zip, you should see one folder, with level.dat right inside it:

MyWorld.zip
└ MyWorld/
   ├ level.dat
   ├ region/
   └ …

Not right: a folder inside a folder (MyWorld/MyWorld/level.dat), or loose files with level.dat at the top of the zip.

3. Upload it

  1. Stop your server.
  2. Open Server Files and click the Upload button.
  3. Choose your world zip, and wait for it to upload.

Browser uploads can be up to 1 GB. If your world is bigger, use FileZilla instead. See Upload and download files with FileZilla.

4. Unzip it

  1. Right-click your zip file, and choose Unzip.
  2. A new folder appears. Click it to check inside. You should see level.dat right there. If you see another folder instead, your world is one folder too deep.

5. Set it as your world

  1. Open Worlds. Your uploaded world is listed here.
  2. Click Select World next to it, and confirm by clicking Change. You'll see a message saying your default world is saved.
  3. Start your server. Once it's running, your world is marked as the current world, and you're playing on it.

Tip: take a backup before you swap worlds, so you can always go back. See Back up and restore your server.
