Move your server to a newer Minecraft version, safely.
Before you upgrade
- Upgrading to a newer Minecraft version is safe for your world.
- Going back to an older version can break your world.
- Once you upgrade, you can't go back, unless you have a backup.
Upgrade your server
- Stop your server.
- Make a backup. Open Backups, click Create backup, name it, and click Start backup. See Back up and restore your server.
- Open Server Versions, and pick your server type, for example Paper.
- Click Install next to the newer version you want.
- Leave Delete Old Files switched off, so you keep your world and settings. Then click Install.
- Start your server.
After upgrading
- Update your plugins or mods too, as old ones may not work on the new version.
- Your players need to use the same Minecraft version.
- Newer Minecraft versions may need a newer Java version. If your server won't start, see Change your Java version.
