Upgrade your server version

Upgrade your server version

Versions, mods & modpacks · Updated 27 October 2026

Move your server to a newer Minecraft version, safely.

Before you upgrade

  • Upgrading to a newer Minecraft version is safe for your world.
  • Going back to an older version can break your world.
  • Once you upgrade, you can't go back, unless you have a backup.

Upgrade your server

  1. Stop your server.
  2. Make a backup. Open Backups, click Create backup, name it, and click Start backup. See Back up and restore your server.
  3. Open Server Versions, and pick your server type, for example Paper.
  4. Click Install next to the newer version you want.
  5. Leave Delete Old Files switched off, so you keep your world and settings. Then click Install.
  6. Start your server.

After upgrading

  • Update your plugins or mods too, as old ones may not work on the new version.
  • Your players need to use the same Minecraft version.
  • Newer Minecraft versions may need a newer Java version. If your server won't start, see Change your Java version.
