Use a world seed on a Java server

Worlds · Updated 27 October 2026

A seed only applies when a new world is made. So you set the seed, then let your server make a fresh world.

Set your seed

  1. Stop your server.
  2. Open Server Files. To keep your current world, rename the world folder (for example to world-old). Or delete it, if you don't need it. See Reset your world.
  3. Open Properties, and search for level-seed.
  4. Paste your seed into the box, then click Save.
  5. Start your server. It generates a new world from your seed.

Check it worked

Type seed in the console. It shows the seed your world is using.

Seed not working?

If the seed command shows a different seed, your old world was still there when the server started. Stop the server, rename or delete the world folder, and start it again.
